Dustin “the Diamond” Poirier vs Michael Johnson

A battle with Florida training cred on the line as ATT and what is left of Blackzillians go at it in the main event. This is Johnson’s first fight back since getting Stockon Slapped on Fox by Nate Diaz and on a 2 fight losing skid. The eight month’s off should have rejuvenated Michael and I believe will be very motivated to get an impressive win. This is a great style match up to show off his every improving striking, athleticism, & wrestling. Dustin doesn’t seem to do well on his back foot.

Keys to winning:

  • Intelligent Pressure
  • Leg kicks at the end of combinations
  • Reactive double legs

Dustin is on a tear since moving up to the lightweight division with 3 of his 4 wins coming via KO or TKO. This is Poirier’s first shot an someone considered a lightweight elite. Should be a big test to see how he deals with one of the division’s most athletic guys.

Keys to winning:

  • Demand center of the cage
  • Counter or fire back combinations
  • Avoid being controlled on the cage/ground

Will Poirier continue his climb toward the lightweight strap or will Michael get back to his winning ways?

Prediction: Michael by Decision

Derek Drunson vs Uriah Hall

This should be an interesting fight between two guys trying not to be come gatekeepers in the middle weight division. Drunson is a former NCAA division II wrestler and has TKOed his last three opponents.  The last few times Drunson faced a ranked fighter, he got stopped. Granted they were the God of War Yoel Romero & Jacare.

Keys to victory:

  • Be first – can’t let Hall get comfortable
  • All the way in range or all the way out
  • Make this as much of a wrestling match as possible

Not too long ago Uriah Hall dazzled fight pundits by stopping Gegard Mousasi in the second round to follow that up with a loss to Robert Whittaker by decision in his last fight. Hall has shown glimpses of greatness throughout his career but has not been able to harness his lightning in a bottle power/technique consistently.

Keys to victory:

  • Circle away from the cage
  • Establish respect early with power shots
  • Use feints to set up the KO shot

Prediction: Derek by decision

Evan Dunham vs TBA

Abel Trujilo was supposed to fight Evan but pulled out due to injury. Now fighter is scheduled to replace him.

Alejandro Perez vs Albert Morals

Perez was supposed to fight Manny Gamburyan but Manny had to pull out from another injury. Perez won the season of Latin Ultimate Fighter he was on but can’t say I saw any of it. Albert is coming off a win in RFA on short notice. If you haven’t gathered by now, I don’t know much another either of them.

Prediction: Morals by upset

Roan Carneiro vs Kenny Robertson

Roan is the poor man’s Thales Leites, an elite BJJ black belt that got cut from the UFC a while ago but has come back looking better than every (until he had to fight Michael Bisping and Gegard Mousasi). He came back from losing two in a row to submit Chris Camozzi in the third round. This will be his first fight a welterweight.

Keys to winning:

  • Take advantage of any ground exchanges
  • Force takedowns
  • Land bombs

Kenny is a bit of a wild man in the techniques he uses on the feet. His wrestling background allows him to be very active in transitions and scrambles. This fight should be interesting because Kenny should be able to stop most of the takedown attempts making this a sloppy striking match. I would give Kenny the edge in technique but not power.

Keys to winning:

  • Don’t end up or give up your back
  • Use angle to counter
  • Win the wrestling exchanges

Predictions: Roan by decision
